                                                                 Cheering for Cheer

When we were raising a young family we inevitably became part of the  child oriented, parent/caregiver driven, sports  activities. Although other adult members of my family were sports oriented, that particular gene never made it to my system.
Hence, it never fails to amaze me when I see the camaraderie that is evident in team sports.
This past week-end has been memorable for a number of reasons, and  this fellowship is just one of them.

Two of my granddaughters were involved in an Atlantic Canada wide "Cheer" Competition.  For the uninitiated, this is a group of girls and boys whose athletic skills of jumps, rolls and choreography are  challenged and displayed for a large and very appreciative audience.

Here, one of the groups warm up before their turn to compete.
There are a number of very strict rules and regulations, and each team wins points based on the number of unique stunts that they perform.

The kind and patient judges have an unobstructed view and are very diligent in their job.

Above, Becky and her Aunt Jen grabbing a snack between performances. (top)  Becky and her sister Paige are very close... even in competition. (bottom) Paige  obviously with happy thoughts.

Both sweet gals worked long and hard and their excellent performances reflected this. They were not in  first place in their respective categories , but they did their best and still have a goal to strive for. That in itself is winning , from my perspective.

One other photo of a memorable week-end shows  how, yet again, we were blasted with the fury of Mother Nature on PMS!!!

Have a wonderful week!

    1. Thank you, Patrick. It was a bit of a commotion with all the people there and the noise, but the girls appreciated having us see their performances.

  5. i've often wondered if those competitions were anything like what's depicted on movies like 'bring it on'. i doubt it, but i kind of think it'd make it even more fun. :)

    1. Wasn't familiar with "Bring it on" so just googled it... Probably similar on some levels, but my grands are 12 & 14, so not quite into the "boyfriend thing" yet...thank goodness! They learned something and had fun and that's what it's about. Nice to hear from you. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Kathy, they do spend a lot of practice time, but Mum...and Dad.. deserve honorable mention as they are the ones who ferry them around all week!

    1. It is really nice to see that despite their "differences" they strongly support each other when they perform. You are right, Monica, they are building memories that I hope they will keep for many years.

  9. I agree! It's not necessarily about being first as it is about making an effort. And being the best you can be.

    1. You sound like a great Mom, NIcole. I feel kids should be rewarded for doing their best and learning to part of a team.... good life lessons. Thanks for stopping by.

  10. I would have loved to have watched that! My eldest daughter, Jessica (age 16), used to do rhythmic gymnastics and got as far as the South African championships twice. She wasn't the top performer, but she did her best and really enjoyed it too. Congrats to your granddaughters!
