A-Z Blogging Challenge -"V"

Hi and welcome to my site!

As a very young girl I lived with my paternal grandmother for three formative years. Being an enthusiastic teacher and lover of words, she invariably had quotations written all over the house... literally. On the backs of cupboard doors, on calendars, napkins or wherever she happened to be.  With this in mind I am finding the authors, in alphabetical sequence, of many of her favorite quotations and am adding some of those that are special to my family as well.  Hope you enjoy!

                                                                           "V"

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe ( 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, theoretical physicist, and polymath.  He is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature.  His works span the fields of poetry, drama, prose, philosophy and science.  His Faust has been called one of the greatest dramatic works of modern European literature.Goethe's influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a major source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry and philosophy.

I have, only in the last few years, become a fan of Van Goethe, but  his  words...and works, are fascinating.

Treat people as if they were what  they ought to be and you will help them become what they are capable of becoming.

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

I do not know myself, and God forbid that I should.

François-Marie Arouet de Voltaire ( 21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher, famous for his wit and for his advocacy of civil liberties including freedom of religion, freedom of expression, free trade and separation of church and state. Voltaire was a prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poetry, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works.

No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.

Ice-cream is exquisite - what a pity it isn't illegal.

(This last quotation is new to me, but as my husband spent 39 years in the business of making ice-cream, I just had to include it. Also, it adds a bit of levity to a rather "heavy" set of quotations!)

  1. Oooo...three scoops....that's my kind of ice cream cone!!! Yes, that Voltaire is pretty deep alright!

"I don't know myself and God forbid that I should", kind of goes with yesterday's quote.
Wow, you just keep coming up with such great ones.

    1. Thanks, Kathy. Given the choice I'd eat my "3 scoops" in a dish though..... too sloppy for a cone!!

    1. No, Monica, I don't think that you or anyone should feel "less than" any of these people. Perhaps "we" just think of things differently. Besides, I bet they ( the "guys" that are quoted) didn't have to worry about families and all the other work things that you have to deal with.
      Thanks for the comment.
