A-Z Blogging Challenge-"M"

Hi and welcome to my site!

As a very young girl I lived with my paternal grandmother for three formative years. Being an enthusiastic teacher and lover of words, she invariably had quotations written all over the house... literally. On the backs of cupboard doors, on calendars, napkins or wherever she happened to be.  With this in mind I am finding the authors, in alphabetical sequence, of many of her favorite quotations and am adding some of those that are special to my family as well.  Hope you enjoy!

                                                                                "M"

Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp Murry (14 October 1888 – 9 January 1923) was a prominent modernist writer of short fiction who was born and brought up in colonial New Zealand  and wrote under the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. Mansfield left for  Great Britain  when she was 19 where she encountered Modernist writers such as D.H.Lawrence  and Virginia Woolf with whom she became close friends. Her stories often focus on moments of disruption and frequently open rather abruptly. Among her most well-known stories are "The Garden Party", "The Daughters of the Late Colonel" and "The Fly." During the First World War Mansfield contracted extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, which rendered any return or visit to New Zealand impossible and led to her death at the age of 40.

Make it a rule of life never to regret and never look back  Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it; it's only good for wallowing in.

                                                   ----------------------------------------

For these quotes, I am deviating only slightly while still on the "M" of the Challenge     I received this  book from my sister for Christmas of 2007. It is called Simple Abundance. A Daybook of Comfort and Joy, by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Since that time I have on many, many occasions flipped through the pages and  I will share a couple of the quotations that jump out at me that pertain to the letter :M:

The ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to; the soul than their simplicity might suggest.  --Thomas Moore

Have nothing in your homes that you do not      know to be useful and believe to be  beautiful.  --William Morris

I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.-- L.M. Montgomery

  1. I really like the 'Never regret...' quote, so true. What a shame she died so young.
I too, read through the Simple Abundance book almost daily. Lot of great quotes there. I would like to have everything in my house that I believe to be beautiful or useful. Maybe someday, I'll throw out, or give away, all the ...other things. Great food for thought letter today!

  2. I really like a couple of todays quotes Pat. I'll have to try to remember the Katherine Mansfield quote, I find as I am getting older I do sometimes look back on my life but her words about regret being,"...only good for wallowing in." are so true.
Sarah Ban Breathnach is a favourite of mine and like you I love many of the quotes she has featured in her book.

    1. Thanks, Monica. I too, tend to look back, but am really trying to focus on today... the present... but it takes a real effort on my part.

  3. Wonderful post, Patricia. It is sad, looking back through time, at how many truly talented people passed long before their respective old ages. I wonder, sometimes, at what the world has missed by their early deaths.

I adore Lucy Maude Montgomery! One of my all-time favorites :-) Odd, as much as I like her, it just occurred to me that I rarely, if ever, include her as a writing influence. :-)

    1. Thanks for your kind comment, Teresa. LM Montgomery just happened to "jump out" at me when I was checking the book. I started reading her books when I was in Grade two!!

  4. How wonderful to honor your grandmother in this way...I love quotes! The Morris quote was good, and I follow his advice. Everything in our home has a purpose, to educate, or reflect God's Word or Creation. I also agree with Katherine that we can't dwell on our regrets, but, 'press on'. Enjoy the second half of the challenge...
