It's Just a Walk in the Park.

May 12,2015

Being retired, one of the ways I keep in touch with former work mates is sharing a coffee or lunch. This week a few of us did just that. It had been a long time since I was in the company of  this particular  group and we reminisced about our nursing days, and how "these young people don't know how easy they have it". I think every senior worker in just about any trade,  profession or job of any kind feels that they learned things "the hard way".I have no doubt that  those ahead of me/us said exactly the same thing.

When lunch was over, those who did not have other plans, decided to go for a short walk in a nearby park.

These are a few of the very early spring sights we saw. One of the positive sides of  living in this part of the world is that we have a very genuine and definitive appreciation of the change of seasons..... and after a winter that left us with 475cm of snow in  about 8 weeks ( that 15.6 FEET!).. we are cognitive of each and every suggestion that new growth and warmth is  inevitable.

What's more inviting and uplifting than  bright yellow daffodils at the gateway to Rockwood Park.

The nice thing about walking and talking is that conversation is relaxed and sporadic and stays on topic about as long as the new blades of grass . Speaking of which, we came upon an area of grass that had been set on fire, providing a stark reminder of what can happen when the weather is warm and dry.

Amazingly, these shoots of new ferns have survived and  like a phoenix pushed their way up through the ashes.

All huddled together, these little families of ferns seem to be providing each other with support and encouragement to keep on growing despite their environment.

A good lesson for us all.

It was nice to see lots of places that we could stop to rest, but we chose to keep on trucking! The view was gorgeous.

Further along  the route,we noticed some remnants of last year, still having a particular beauty and symmetry of its own.

These dried thistle heads  caught my eye. They seem to have an armor that has allowed them to remain intact and upright despite  they harshness of winter.

Nearing the end of our walk, now, I will leave you with this burning philosophical question.
If a tree falls in the park, and no one is there to hear it....yadda, yadda.....

 Have a great week!

  4. Lovely pictures. Some plants need fire to germinate, maybe that applies to those ferns. The Daffodils are really lovely.

    1. It was a fun day, Kathy. Actually there are about the same amount of blossoms there as you would have in your gardens. The harsh winter took its toll everywhere. We will have to go out again soon. Thanks for you comments.
