I have been a nurse for 27 years and the mother of 3 beautiful but active children for 16 years before that,so health issues have been important to me for a very long time. We all have grown since those early years but my health concerns have only intensified.
With that in mind I want to take a few minutes of your time to play a word game with you. It won't take as long as those quizzes we all play on face book, but will be more rewarding. I am going to say two words and I want you to spend 5 seconds thinking about the images and words that first come to your mind.
OK, here we go....
Dental Health----- remember,5 seconds. Did you picture a young smiling face with beautiful white teeth? Or, perhaps it was dental floss or an animated toothbrush. Either way, you get the idea, right?
Now here's another.
Heart Health-----Now I know that caricature of a heart with stick arms and legs probably came to mind. Maybe words like" low cholesterol" or "fibre" were also there. If so, good for you! You are really doing well. ( Bet you are smiling now.... you deserve it!) Two more and that's all. I promise.
Physical Health----- The pictures that enter MY head would be some lean happy person out jogging. Another would be a zumba or Yoga class. All would be correct and that includes yours too!
One more. Are you still with me??
Mental Health----- uh,oh, that's a toughie isn't it. The image of a tired and depressed person, barely able to get out of bed, comes to mind easily. Also, the image of the actor who portrays the "psycho" on a TV show. Another that comes, unbidden, is that of the child who is consistently bullied and has forgotten how to hold their head high and smile. If this is the type of image you had, don't feel badly, you are not alone.
By now, you know where I am going with this. With the first three we focused on "health", and that is how it should be. With the last one, mental health, we seem to relate more with the negative images and the "illness" rather than "health". There WILL be a turn around and the winds of change have started to blow.
The Bell Let's Talk initiative is one of those ways and you and I are the others.
One of the ways I, personally, try to maintain mental health is being outside. I love being able to see the water, go for walks and enjoy my life. What do YOU do for YOUR mental health?
